From the Tübingen Left-Frontier Café Group to an Institutional Project

LEFT-P’s pre-public history is tied to a small working group later remembered as the Tübingen Left-Frontier Café Group.

The name marks a practical setting rather than a formal institution. It refers to a small circle in which questions of left theory, frontier concepts, translation, political theology, and public organisation were discussed before the League acquired a public-facing structure. In this period, the group’s work remained deliberately limited in visibility.

The records from 2019 indicate that meetings were used to test whether an organisation of engaged theoretical work could combine research, editorial practice, translation, and institution-building. The concern was not simply to form a discussion circle, but to establish a structure capable of preserving and circulating theoretical work over time.

The later offices, document indexes, research pages, editorial statements, and public records of LEFT-P should be read against this early setting. They are the institutional expression of a problem first posed in miniature: how can theory become organised without becoming merely bureaucratic?
